Gemini App Gets “Extended” Thinking Level and More App Integrations

Google is continuing to expand the Gemini app with smarter controls and deeper third-party app support. The latest update introduces a new “Thinking level” option for some users, allowing them to choose how deeply Gemini should reason before generating a response.

The feature is currently appearing for selected users and seems to be part of a limited rollout. It appears inside the Gemini model picker, where users can choose between Standard and Extended thinking levels when using supported models such as Gemini 3 Flash and Gemini 3.1 Pro.

What Is Gemini’s Extended Thinking Level?

The new Extended option is designed for prompts that need more careful reasoning. Instead of generating a faster, shorter answer, Gemini can spend more effort analyzing the request before responding.

This could be useful for tasks such as:

  • Solving complex questions
  • Comparing multiple options
  • Planning projects
  • Writing detailed explanations
  • Handling research-heavy prompts
  • Improving accuracy on multi-step tasks

For everyday prompts, Standard thinking may be enough. But for more advanced work, Extended thinking could help Gemini deliver more complete and thoughtful responses.

Why This Matters for Gemini Users

AI assistants are no longer just quick-answer tools. Users now expect them to help with work, planning, creativity, shopping, coding, and decision-making.

By adding a thinking-level control, Gemini gives users more flexibility. A fast response is useful for simple tasks, while deeper reasoning is better for complex ones. This makes the Gemini app feel more customizable and practical for different types of users.

Gemini Is Also Preparing More App Integrations

Alongside the new thinking controls, Google is preparing additional third-party app integrations for Gemini. Current third-party apps include GitHub, OpenStax, Spotify, and WhatsApp, while support documents indicate that Canva, Instacart, and OpenTable integrations are also on the way.

These integrations could make Gemini more useful beyond simple chat.

Canva Integration

With Canva support, Gemini could help users create designs, access templates, manage project files, organize assets, reply to design comments, and move content between folders. It may also support workflows that start with image generation in Gemini and continue with editing in Canva.

Instacart Integration

The upcoming Instacart integration could let users check product availability, find nearby stores, and add grocery or household items directly to their cart. Users may also be able to turn recipes into shopping lists with Gemini’s help.

OpenTable Integration

OpenTable support could allow Gemini to help users find restaurants, check table availability, book reservations, modify bookings, and cancel existing reservations. The integration is expected to use Reserve with Google to complete bookings.

A Bigger Push Toward AI-Powered Daily Tasks

The combination of Extended Thinking and app integrations shows where Gemini is heading. Google appears to be building Gemini into a more capable assistant that can reason through complex prompts and take action across connected services.

Instead of only answering questions, Gemini is becoming a tool that can help users create, shop, book, organize, and manage tasks from one place.

The new Gemini Extended Thinking level could make the app more useful for users who want deeper, more accurate responses. At the same time, upcoming integrations with Canva, Instacart, and OpenTable suggest that Gemini is moving toward a more action-focused AI assistant experience.

As these features roll out more widely, Gemini may become a stronger productivity companion for both everyday users and professionals.
