Gemini App Rolls Out "Free" Personal Intelligence and Full-Screen Redesign
In a massive win for users who aren't ready to pay for a monthly AI subscription, Google is bringing its most sophisticated personalization features to everyone. 1. Personal Intelligence for Everyone
Previously locked behind a paid Google AI Plan, Personal Intelligence is now landing on free accounts.
- The Power: This feature allows Gemini to "connect the dots" across your entire Google life, Gmail, Drive, Photos, YouTube, Maps, and Search to provide tailored answers without you needing to provide extra context.
- Opt-In Control: Users are prompted to opt-in and can hand-pick which apps Gemini can access.
- Privacy Toggle: A new toggle in the "Tools" menu allows you to turn off Personal Intelligence for a specific prompt if you want a generic, non-personalized response.
2. The Memory Rebrand
Google is officially moving away from the term Past Gemini chats in favor of Memory.
- Active Learning: This isn't just a list of old conversations. Memory allows Gemini to reference your past interactions to better understand your preferences over time.
- Seamless Context: If you told Gemini about your cat's dietary restrictions three months ago, it should now remember that when you ask for "treat recommendations" today.
3. A Bold New Visual: The Full-Screen Glow
The most immediate change you'll notice is how Gemini looks when you summon it on Android:
- Perimeter Light: Instead of the glow just appearing around the pill-shaped prompt box, it now illuminates the entire perimeter of your screen.
- Signature Colors: The effect starts with the classic Google blue, with red, yellow, and green accents at the bottom, before fading into a solid blue and disappearing as the AI finishes processing.
- Unified Design: This full-screen effect brings Gemini’s "assistant" mode in line with the visual language of Circle to Search and Gemini Screen Automation.
4. Availability & Rollout Status
- Regions: This rollout is currently focused on free personal Google users in the United States.
- Platforms: The visual glow-up is rolling out to Android users via the latest Google App update.
- Not for Workspace: As with many recent Gemini updates, these personalization features are currently restricted from Business, Enterprise, and Education Workspace accounts.
