Google Duo is Officially Gone as Meet Completes Its Transformation
It’s been a long, winding road for Google’s video calling strategy, but the journey has finally reached its destination. Google completed the full decommissioning of Legacy (Duo) Calling, officially making Google Meet the company's single, unified platform for all video communication.
While the "Duo" name was technically replaced in 2022, Legacy features and settings remained tucked inside the Meet app as a bridge for longtime users. Those bridges have now been dismantled.
1. What’s Gone? Farewell to "Knock Knock"
If you’ve noticed your Meet app looks a little cleaner (or perhaps a little emptier) this week, it’s because the legacy infrastructure has been stripped away.
- Knock Knock: Duo’s signature feature, which allowed you to see a live video of the caller before you answered, is officially retired.
- Legacy Call History: Your old Duo-era call logs have been removed from the Meet app.
- Special Modes: Family mode, Mirror mode, and the Moments screenshot feature have been discontinued.
- Legacy Settings: The Calling (legacy) menu has vanished, replaced by a streamlined, unified settings panel.
2. The New Standard: Meet Calling
Google is replacing these older features with modern, AI-enhanced alternatives that align with the rest of the Workspace ecosystem:
- Low Light & Portrait: Instead of the old Low Light Mode, Meet now uses AI-driven Video Lighting Adjustment and Portrait Touch-up to keep you looking sharp.
- Data Saving: The Data Saving Mode has been replaced by a more efficient Meet Saver Mode.
- Modern Essentials: Users now have full access to live captions, in-call chat, screen sharing, and stackable background effects, features that were never part of the original Duo experience.
3. Privacy & Reachability Changes
With the legacy system gone, how people find you on Meet has shifted:
- Email by Default: Google Meet calling now defaults to being reachable via your email address.
- Contact Control: To prevent unwanted calls, you must go to Settings > General and toggle on Only contacts can call me.This syncs directly with your Google Contacts.
4. Hardware Impact: Nest Displays
For those using Google Nest hardware, the transition brings a few specific limitations:
- Group Calls: Incoming group calls are still supported on Nest displays.
- Outgoing Limits: You can no longer start an outgoing group call from a Nest speaker or display; these must now be initiated from a mobile device or computer.
Duo was the simple, fun video app we loved, but Meet is the powerhouse we need for 2026. While we’ll miss the 'Knock Knock' surprises, the unified experience is a win for anyone tired of managing two different calling worlds.
