Google Makes Switching to Gemini Easier with "Memory" and Chat Imports

One of the biggest hurdles to trying a new AI assistant is the "fresh start" problem the idea that you have to re-teach the new AI everything your old one already knows. Google removed that friction by launching a suite of Memory and Chat History Import tools for Gemini.

Now, you can bring your digital "memories," preferences, and years of conversations from other AI providers directly into the Gemini ecosystem, allowing you to pick up exactly where you left off.

1. Importing Your "Memories"

The new Memory Import feature allows Gemini to instantly learn your key preferences and relationships.

  • How it works: In Gemini Settings, you'll find a suggested prompt. Copy and paste this into your current AI app (like ChatGPT or Claude). Your old AI will generate a summary of everything it knows about you your interests, family details, or dietary restrictions.
  • The Result: Paste that summary back into Gemini, and it will securely save those facts to your context. No more repeating yourself!

2. Bring Your Full Chat History via ZIP

For those with deep, long-form project histories in other apps, Google is introducing a full chat history import:

  • ZIP Upload: You can now upload a ZIP file of your exported data from other AI providers directly into Gemini.
  • Resume Conversations: These threads become searchable and interactive. You can literally "continue" an old project started in another app right inside the Gemini interface.

3. From "Past Chats" to "Memory"

To reflect the AI's growing ability to remember you, Google is rebranding the "Past Chats" sidebar to "Memory."

  • Unified Intelligence: This new Memory hub combines your imported data with relevant insights from your Gmail, Photos, and Search history (if you've granted access).
  • Contextual Help: For example, if you once researched hotels in Barcelona in another app and imported that chat, Gemini can now use those specific neighborhood preferences to help you build a personalized itinerary for a return trip.

4. Availability & Security

  • Consumer Focus: These tools are currently available for personal consumer accounts.
  • Regional & Age Limits: Currently not supported for Business, Enterprise, or U18 accounts. It is also not yet available for users in the EEA, UK, or Switzerland.
  • Privacy First: All imported data is securely saved to your Gemini context and can be deleted at any time through the new Memory settings.

An AI that knows you is an AI that helps you. With the new Memory and Chat Import tools, you don't have to choose between a fresh start and your digital history, you can have both.
