"Notebooks" Now Sync Across Gemini and NotebookLM
For users managing complex projects, the days of juggling disconnected AI chats are fading. Google has introduced Notebooks in the Gemini app, a feature that creates a shared, persistent workspace between Gemini and its specialized research partner, NotebookLM.
This update effectively turns Gemini into a comprehensive project manager. By grouping chats, files, and custom instructions into unified "Notebooks," the platform moves from being a simple conversational assistant to a personal knowledge base that stays in sync across the Google ecosystem.
A Unified Knowledge Base
The core of this update is a "two-way sync" that ensures your research follows you wherever you work.
- Shared Context: Any file, PDF, or document added to a Notebook in Gemini instantly appears as a source in NotebookLM.
- Seamless Transitions: A student might upload class notes to a Notebook in Gemini and then switch to NotebookLM to generate a Cinematic Video Overview or Infographic. Later, they can return to Gemini to draft an essay outline using that same, perfectly preserved context.
- Custom Persona per Project: Within each Notebook, users can set specific instructions for Gemini's tone and behavior, tailoring the AI to the specific needs of that individual project.
Streamlined Organization
The Gemini interface has been updated to accommodate these long-term workflows:
- Dedicated Section: A new "Notebooks" section now appears in the side panel, situated between "My stuff" and "Gems."
- Consolidated Projects: Users can move past chat threads into specific Notebooks, ensuring that relevant conversations are never buried under newer, unrelated tasks.
- Enhanced Sourcing: Depending on the subscription plan, Notebooks allow for a greater number of sources, making it possible to tackle expansive research projects without losing the thread.
Availability Details
- Current Access: The feature is currently rolling out on the web for subscribers of Google AI Ultra, Pro, and Plus.
- Expanding Soon: Google plans to bring Notebooks to mobile devices, free-tier users, and more regions, including Europe, in the coming weeks.
- Eligibility: This feature is generally available for personal accounts but is not currently supported for users under 18 or for standard Workspace and Education accounts.
Technology is most powerful when it stops asking you to repeat yourself. By bridging Gemini and NotebookLM, Google has created a workspace that remembers your research so you don't have to.
