Stop Digging, Start Asking: AI Overviews Land in Gmail Search

We’ve all been there: staring at a search result page in Gmail, trying to figure out which of the 15 Re: Project Launch emails actually contains the final deadline. Google officially ended the sift and search era by bringing AI Overviews to Gmail search.

Now, instead of just searching for keywords, you can ask Gmail complex, natural language questions and get a concise summary that pulls answers from across multiple email threads.

How it Works: Natural Conversations with Your Inbox

Inside the Gmail search bar, you no longer have to be a search operator expert. You can simply ask:

  • “What are the performance improvements Owen mentioned?”
  • “What are the milestones we agreed to for ‘Project Astro’?”
  • “Which invoices for Sandbox Supplies are still outstanding?”

Gmail’s AI will scan your relevant threads and provide an instant summary at the top of your search results. It saves you from opening every individual message to piece together the full picture of a conversation or project.

Setting Up for Success

If you're an admin or a power user, here is how to make sure the feature is ready to go:

  • For Admins: This is available by default for domains that have Gemini for Workspace and Workspace Intelligence enabled in the Admin console.
  • For End Users: You need to have Smart features and Google Workspace smart features turned on in your Gmail settings.
  • Who Gets It: Initially launched for Google AI Pro and Ultra personal accounts, it’s now rolling out to Business (Starter, Standard, Plus), Enterprise (Starter, Standard, Plus), and Education tiers.

A Smarter Way to Navigate the Day

The true value of AI Overviews in Gmail isn't just speed—it’s clarity. By transforming a list of fragmented messages into a single, cohesive answer, Google is helping users reclaim the time they used to spend playing email detective.

Whether you’re catching up on a long thread after a vacation or trying to track down travel details for an upcoming trip, your inbox is now working for you, rather than just acting as a storage bin. The rollout began on April 22 and will continue over the next few weeks, so look for the new "Overview" box next time you hit search.

Email has always been a treasure trove of information, but the map was often missing. With AI Overviews, Google is finally giving us the X marks the spot. By turning your search bar into a conversation, your inbox stops being a list of tasks and starts being a source of answers. What’s the first question you’re going to ask your Gmail?
